Many bodybuilders and weight lifters might agree that this sounds strange. But that is why they still have scrawny arms and a small chest.

Do Our Ancestors Tell Us Everything We Need To Know About Fitness and Nutrition?

Catagory: Nutrition

Palaeolithic Lifestyle

I have been following the Palaeolithic lifestyle for nearly a year now. You may know it as the ‘caveman diet’, although this does not do justice to the concept.

The premise is that by eating what our ancestors ate and exercising as they exercised, we optimise our health and fitness. Since they ate like this and exercised like this for hundreds of thousands of years, natural selection dictates that our bodies will be designed to function best under those conditions.

Central Philosophy

Two of the concepts central to the philosophy are:

We have been farming for only 8-10 thousand years – an evolutionary drop in the ocean. Palaeolithic man did …

Keep The End In Mind

Catagory: Lifestyle

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. – Mark Twain

You wake up in the morning, get ready for work, wake up the kids, get them dressed and drop them off to school. While on your way to work, you get stuck in traffic while chowing down on your breakfast. When you walk into your office 15 minutes late, you have ten calls on hold for you, and six memos from the other side of the building. By the time lunch rolls around, you’ve already written three reports on stuff you don’t even really care about, but you …

Stress Sucks (the Life Out Of You)

Catagory: Lifestyle

How’s your morning been? Did you stumble out of bed sleep-deprived (yet again)? Were you sent into a downward spiral when you discovered you were out of coffee filters? Did your toddler/teenager make getting ready an obstacle course and emotional battlefield? Any brushes with road rage (or just annoying road construction) on the way into work? Forgot the bills on the kitchen table again? Have a new project with your favorite passive-aggressive co-worker? Maybe your spouse called to say the car broke down and needs a new $400 part. Oh, and you have four extra shipments to get out or maybe 6 phone calls and 32 emails to read …

Intermittent Fasting for Neurotic Athletes

Catagory: Nutrition

Athletes are a persnickety, dogmatic bunch; we’re open to change in so long as it fits the narrowly constructed worldview that we perceive has brought us success. Be it training, diet, or mental preparation, we tend to bend ideas to fit into “our” box. So understand when I tell you that the idea of intermittent fasting (IF), while good in theory, didn’t quite fit into my athletic worldview. I was a skinny kid growing up and had worked hard for every pound of weight I had gained by eating large and often. I cared about being big and strong, not about longevity and gene expression! I was curious but …

Why K.I.S.S. Is Your Secret Weapon For Fast (And Lasting!) Fitness Results

Catagory: Fitness

I’ve been a black belt for over 7 years now.

I can perform virtually any fancy spinning, jumping or flying kick you can think of… I can do back flips… break boards, bricks, bones… and… I know tons of impressive looking techniques to disarm a vicious thug with a weapon.

But you know what?

In a real fight I know a hard kick to the balls or jamming my fingers in someone’s eyes is going to work a lot better than ANY fancy amount of “black belt” moves.

Best of all: you can learn to kick someone in the groin or rake their eyes in less than a day. In fact …

Start Exercise The Right Way - 3 Golden Rules

Catagory: Fitness

Whether the intention is losing weight or building muscles, the difference between working out and not working out is just too obvious to state. But to some, what may not be so obvious is the difference between doing and doing it right. Apart from the possible injuries, fitness mistakes affect productivity and most likely improve your frustration rather than your body. Here are 3 Golden Rules of Starting Exercising.

1. Seek Help
Just like any bad habits, bad exercising habits are hard to break. So, the best thing is to start right. As tempting as it is to download a program and start it at home, it …

How I Gained 13 Days in a Year

Catagory: Lifestyle

I’m not one for hallelujahs. Being of characteristic British reserve I rarely sing and shout about anything. So when I tell you that the following testimony is about as close to an epiphany as I have ever had, or am ever likely to have, you can be sure I mean it.

I was always an exercise junkie. As a youth I would hang around the squash courts for hours playing all comers. I’ll admit there was a period in which I concentrated primarily on the consumption of beer - a sport in its own right, I would have argued at the time – but this was clearly down to the …

Surya Namaskar, The Sun Salutation

Catagory: Fitness

I’ve started performing Surya Namaskar (SN), or Sun Salutation, each morning. SN is a sequence of 12 yoga postures, or asanas, designed to increase one’s level of physical, spiritual, and mental awareness. What I like about SN is that the order of the 12 asanas alternately stretches the spine backwards and forwards, as well as stretching out your calves, chest, upper back, and glutes. In effect, you receive a full-body stretch in an extremely short period of time. One set of SN is 12 asanas performed on each side, i.e. with left foot back first, and then right foot back first. I perform just three sets of these each …
